About Celine Nordal, the label & person.
Growing up on the countryside, far far away from the big city - I never in my wildest dream, would've imagined to turn out, as I am today. It was my wildest dream, something I wanted so bad, that it almost felt embarrassing to admit.
Fortunately, I grew up with parents, that liked to push me to the edge and challenge me. My mom always said to me, that I should study hard, so I would have as many open doors as possible, when getting older. She wanted me to excel and always do the best of my ability.
My dad, was a plumber, working his own company - I used to sit in his workshop every weekend, helping him put horsehair around pipes, that was going to be installed for radiators. He put so much effort, energy and love into his craft. He truly enjoyed working. Also on the weekends. He taught me what hard work meant and what you could achieve with it. That must have altered my brain forever.
Graduating high school, I had already rented an apartment and was living full time in Copenhagen. I actually, to be exact, moved a month before graduating. I was so ready to leave for the big city. At any cost.
That cost was working at Mc Donald's every weekend night shift. While having a full time job at a pension fund. I had no idea that design was in the pipeline.
One afternoon, while I was about to apply for law school, I was chatting with my roomie at the time - talking about this fantastic and totally unrealistic design school - she told me to send them an email - "what was the worst thing that could happen?"
I had never sewed anything before - I didn't even know how to thread a sewing machine. So here I was- going into this amazing and super expensive school, with a powerpoint. Talking about the amazing Savoir faire, that Chanel did that summer. And lying about the fact that my parents could help me pay for tuition.
And i must've had some sort of charm, because, four days later, I was accepted to the school. Without any financial plan, a job at Mc Donalds and a super expensive apartment.
That summer changed my life. I found a 20 sqm apartment on the fifth floor, with a shower in the basement. Moved everything on my own, with the local bus and big dreams. lol. Sounds super cliche, but it was actually what happened.
One thing led to the other, and hard work payed of. Three years, several jobs and internships and a big student loan later - I graduated my BA in fashion design from Scandinavian Academy of Fashion Design.
It was unreal.
Back then, I already knew that if I was going to do fashion design ever again, it would be on my own terms, and the dream about Celine Nordal the Label, started.
I also knew that I would need to learn from the best first. Knowledge is and will always be, key.
During my first month of unemployment, I met this amazing lady that had been doing PR for forever, she took me in, taught me so many great and amazing things. She taught me how to navigate the fashion industry, and for that I will always be grateful.
It gave me the confidence, to try everything out. And that leads us, to where we are today.
We are trying, learning and having fun.
For me, everything is about joy, bringing smiles and whimsy into the world. Everything is so serious - we stress and we run. We forget the small moments. The joy of wearing a jacket that makes you smile in the morning. Seeing the glittery sleeves on your jacket, while you're biking through the most horrible Copenhagen weather on a Tuesday morning.
If my designs, and craftsmanship can ever make someone smile, on a hard day - I have done my job and purpose. And I will retire happily in around 80 years.
I strive to make everything perfect, but sometimes, when a mistake happens in the building phase, I let it be. Just for the whimsy. Often, that makes a fun twist to things, and looks even cooler, than the original idea. What those mistakes are, I will never tell you - and that's the magic of being a designer.
Also, I love horses and the old circus - I have no idea why - I get asked about it a lot - I have no clue.
And that pretty much sums both me and the label up in one short sentence.
Love, Celine, the person.
